The historic Derby Green has a new monument after volunteers from the Derby Fire Department planned, raised funds and built the 9-11 Memorial. The formal dedication took place on a grey Sunday morning (November 16, 2014). The video and pictures above will give you a feel for the emotional morning.

Earlier story & Concept

The Derby Fire Department felt it was necessary to create a monument to memorialize all those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. The Fire Department applied to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to receive a steel artifact. Fortunately the Fire Department was approved and received a section of steel beam from the world trade center site. The Fire Department is now in the process of constructing a public monument for permanent display on the historic Derby City Green.

The Monument will be constructed on the Elizabeth Street side of the Green between the Fireman’s Memorial and the Korean War Memorial. (See more plans on the Valley Indy story)

A major fundraising source for the construction and maintenance will be the sale of etched bricks. These bricks will form the walk way to and around the monument. The cost of a brick is $100 dollars and can be etched to memorialize a company, group, individual, family, or loved one. The brick size is 4” x 8” and can have up to three lines of text with up to eighteen characters on a line.

Payments should be by check and can be mailed to:
