Duties

The Fire Marshal’s duties include enforcement of Connecticut General Statutes Chapter 541 and the numerous regulations promulgated under the provisions of these standards. Some of the major duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Plan review of new or remodel buildings, construction inspection, and annual inspections thereafter on all town buildings.

  • Review new subdivisions and commercials sites for proper installation of hydrants and fire department access.

  • Fire investigation for all fires for cause and origin.

  • Issue permits for blasting and flammable liquid tanks.

  • Certification of nursery schools and day care centers.

  • Certification of hospitals and convalescent centers.

  • Certification of liquor permits for liquor establishments premises.

  • Fire prevention education programs along with providing safety tips and education.

  • Inspects all buildings except 1- and 2-family houses as well as manufacturer buildings.

  • Required to maintain 90 hours of continuing education credit every 3 years.

  • Inspects bulk tank installations of flammable and combustible liquids and gases.

  • Inspect gasoline and diesel fuel dispensing stations.

  • Conducts inspections for fireworks and special effects displays.

  • Inspects regulated tents and portable structures.

  • Receives complaints regarding fire hazards and potential Code violations and responds and investigates them as necessary.

  • Providing safety tips and information on general fire code enforcement.

  • Enforcement of the Connecticut flammable and combustible liquids code.
