Tips on Searching the Website

Can I use symbols to narrow down my search?

You can narrow down your search using Booleans that allow advanced searching. The most popular boolean operators are AND, OR and NOT.   AND means to include all of the words.   OR means to include any of the words.   NOT means exclude.

When you put search terms in quotation marks, it's called a "phrase search." The search engine will give you pages that have the terms in the exact order of the words in quotations.   Below is an example of an advanced search:

aldermen AND "O'Sullivan Island" AND 2014 OR 2013 NOT 2012

Can I search the Minutes for just one Board or Commission?

The search engine cannot be narrowed down to just one Board or Commission, but it does search the entire site.

Calendar of Events

How can I view events for a single Board/Commission or all Boards and Commissions?

At the top left of the calendar is a button (Select Calendars) that will allow you to check the box for one or more Boards or Commissions.  You could also "Select All" to include all of the Boards and Commissions listed.

How do I unselect all Boards and Commissions if I mistakenly clicked on Select All?

The best way to unselect all Boards and Commissions is to click on "Calendar of Events" and then Select Calendars.  The default is always set with a check next to Upcoming Events.

If you want to Select all Boards and Commissions, but not Upcoming Events, click on "Select All" and then click on Select Calendars to uncheck Upcoming Events.

Local and State Traffic Issues

Why doesn't the Eastbound Traffic Light on Route 34 in front of Crystal Cleaners have a left-turn arrow?

New Haven Avenue is a state roadway. The Office of the State Traffic Administration (OSTA) is the legal traffic authority for all state roadways. Several years ago the City of Derby petitioned OSTA to evaluate the feasibility of a left turn arrow at this intersection. OSTA produced an engineering study that did not support this request. No action was taken and the City of Derby has no traffic authority over this roadway.

Can any improvements be made for the parking by the Dew Drop Inn?

The Local Traffic Authority (LTA) and Derby Police Department have been meeting with the stakeholders involved with the parking issue at the Dew Drop Inn for many months. After several meetings, research, and studies, the parking plan implemented by the LTA was the public policy chosen because it was in the best interest of the stakeholders and public safety.

A request for “No Parking” signs near the intersection of Park Avenue @ North Avenue was not entertained because a City Parking Ordinance already prohibits parking within 25’ of a corner.

“On Street” parking is currently permitted on Park Avenue. The patrol division monitored the area for several weeks and located some parking violations.

The police department will investigate any parking violations that are reported and recommend that complainants call while the violation is occurring so that enforcement action can be taken if needed.
