Update on Water Service in and around Hawthorne Avenue

Chief of Staff Linda Fusco spoke to Ed Crowder, Senior Communications Specialist of the Regional Water Authority late this afternoon due to continuing reports of discolored water as well as sediment in some areas of the city, particularly the area of Hawthorne Avenue from Silver Hill Road to Sixth Street. Mr. Crowder asked the City of Derby to convey to residents that while they’re not sure what’s causing the issue, they continue to work on it. He wants Derby residents to be assured they are not forgotten. He makes these suggestions:

!. Turn on every COLD water tap in your house and run the water for 10 minutes straight. Also, flush your toilet multiple times during this period.

2. If this doesn’t work, call RWA at 203-562-2040 and file a report specific to your address. This is a 24-7 emergency line.

3.. DO NOT run HOT water during this period AT ALL. It will bring sediment into your hot water tank.

4. DO NOT wash clothes while your tap water is discolored or has sediment. It may stain your clothes.

Mr. Crowder said “ Our first priority is always to address the issue at hand and ensure the safety and well-being of the community. We understand the concerns raised by city officials in Derby, and we take them seriously. We are reviewing our internal processes to ensure good coordination with our field crews, and timely communication with our municipal and community partners.”

At this time, the Regional Water Authority will not be contacting customers directly.

The City of Derby has been monitoring this matter closely and pressing the Regional Water Authority for communication and answers.

A reminder:

The City of Derby does not provide water service.  Water Service is provided to the vast majority of Derby residents by the Regional Water Authority.

The City of Derby does provide for sewage treatment through the Water Pollution Control Authority.
